A freelancer is someone who works on multiple contracts each year. These contracts could be one after the other or they could be concurrently, depending on the role. The one thing that joins all freelancers together is their need to source contracts.
Unlike a permanent employment, where it is the employers' responsibility to provide work to their employees, freelancers are hired for a specific role a certain amount of time.
The differences between being a freelancer and being employed as staff :
Length of work contract: freelancers are contracted for a specific amount of work or time; staff have permanent contracts
Pay: freelancers are paid by the job; staff have steady income that get played by their employer.
Tax: freelancers usually submit a tax return each year and pay taxes and National Insurance owing; staff have tax and National Insurance deducted at source
Pension: freelancers pay into a self-funded pension; staff can join a company pension scheme
Kit: freelancers use their own equipment however staff have their equipment provided by their employer
Freelancing can be very rewarding because you get the work with a wide range of people on variety of different projects. Also, you would have more control over the way you work for example what your schedule is and where you would work.
To be a freelancer you need to a have passion for the screen sector and a love of the content created and the skills needed to play their part in creating the content. Also the financial drive to earn a living working in the sector.
